COVID safety at UUMC

In is your choice about masking within UUMC. ALL Volunteers are asked to be fully vaccinated prior to beginning their volunteer work. Personal health/hygiene guidance provided by the USDA are followed by and for all staff and volunteers.  Please check with Galyn, outreach@uumcsyracuse.org for most current information.

Additional/on-going opportunities#1- knit or crochet winter hats for our breakfast guests, #2- fill quart sized ziploc bags with dry dog food/cat food kibble (supplies provided) , #3- great for families: The Food Center @ 324 assists in filling a Free Food Pantry Cabinet at the corner of Hawley Ave and Lodi St. This cabinet sits outside Syracuse Cultural Workers. It is in constant need of diverse foods that neighborhood folk can select and gather for their personal consumption. Please feel free to help us add to this pantry ongoingly with much needed foods. 
Restart is a city Methodist ministry that collects, moves and supplies basic furnishings to homes and apartments for folk who are re-starting their lives. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!! Ongoing opportunities. Please contact Jackie Sadowski jlsadowski@aol.com for more information

Tuesday, October 11, 2022, approx. 9an (ish)-completion, unload Food Bank Truck. Approximately 2hr volunteer opportunity. Work with staff and volunteers in loading hand trucks with cases of food from pallets delivered outside. Move foods into basement store rooms via elevator and hand trucks. Efforts include: lifting 25+lb cases of food, pushing 100+ lbs on a hand truck & remaining on one’s feet for the duration of this event.
Thursday, October 13, 2022, 9-completion, Pack Emergency Food boxes with shelf stable foods. Approx. 3hr. volunteer opportunity. Move cases of food from basement storage rooms into basement food packing room. Assembly line style unpack food case into single household distribution boxes. Work entails; lifting 25+lb. cases of foods, pushing 100+lb on hand trucks/carts & remaining on one’s feet for the entire activity.
Friday, October 14, 2022, 9-12:30pm Emergency Food Distribution 3.5hr. volunteer opportunity. Inside & Outside effort. Work entails; Complete Emergency Food Box packing, Unloading Food Bank truck, moving boxes into guest’s personal vehicles, working with the general public and many volunteers as a team. Additionally, repeated lifting of 25+lb., remaining on one’s feet for the duration of the event, and effective communication with many folk are points of effort for this event.
Sunday, October 16, 2022,  8-10:30am Free to-go Community Breakfast & Coffee distribution, Outside distribution/Inside packing.  More detailed information will be shared with registrants about this event, please know that you will be working within a group of volunteers and leaders to create 170+ free to-go brown bags breakfasts for our community members. Bags are generously filled with diverse nutrient dense foods, hot coffee, bottled water, juice and occasional supplemental foods.
Distribution happens outside our building at the corner of East Genesee and University Ave. and at our mobile, off site breakfast at the Pomeroy Addiction Treatment Center, Erie Blvd. Volunteers are needed to pack breakfast bags and transition to the outside distribution sites.
